Cliff Burden (Michael Madsen) is a rural police detective assigned to investigate the murder of a wealthy businessman who committed the cardinal error of falling for the prime suspect: Cathy Merrims (Laura Johnson), who owns the hotel where the killing took place. As he learns more about the woman's troubled past and the sinister influence of her oddball psychiatrist, Burden begins to let his romantic obsession cloud his approach to the case.
